what to do with tarp stakes.

seems like i read a post not too long ago about how to pack tarp stakes so as to not poke holes in your pack, tarp or other gear. can't find it now, so i thought i'd start a new thread with something i did this week when packing my stakes. i noticed that my 45L pack's internal frame is basically removable aluminum stays behind the bladder pocket that run about 3/4 the length of the pack. my particular model has straps that fold over the top of the stays to hold them in place. well, i use an 8.5 x 8.5 tarp hung like a diamond, so i only need 2 stakes (which have shock cord loops ties thru the eye, btw) to tie down the two corners. it just so happens that there is enough room in the aluminum stay pockets that i can slide the stakes inside the stay pockets. the pockets basically form a sheath such that the stakes are held in a vertical position with no stress on the tips. i'm confident that i could carry 4 aluminum stakes if i needed to carry a hex tarp. just passing it along for those who need it.

Here's a basic stake sack I had Lukesultralite.com make from a hybrid polyester/cuben fiber. It's the material he uses for his critter food bags. Tough stuff, has a velcro enclosure at the top, I thought I'd put a nylon mini-sbiner on it and clip it to my ridgeline.

Tyvek envelope cut to a flat piece and pockets sewn for stakes, hammock suspension, and tarp ridgeline. This all rolls up and is secured with a thick rubber band, until I can find the time to put a piece of omnitape around it.

you can also use a post office tyvek envelope to make a tool roll. My wife made some last year and we even put some in a raffle at a hang and they fetched a decent price. i put some extra rope in there as well. Dont have time to post the link but you should be able to search and find a tool roll.

I've used a square of Tyvek and a rubber band, rolling it up like a burrito and also using the Tyvek for a dry clean place to put my feet when dressing, etc. A plastic pencil box or eyeglass container will work too.

I slip my tarp stakes in my buddies pack when he isn't looking and retrieve them when we get to where we are camping.

I roll mine up in my ridge line organizer along with my straps, lines and setup hardware. Keeps it all handy and together so setup is easier.
