Why not sew a box stitch in the end of the webbing and add a biner? That would alleviate the need for the four wrap knot and allow you to go with a shorter strap. Mine webbing is about the same length as the original HH spectra, maybe a bit longer. I think its somewhere around ten feet or so. BD

Why not just go with the carabiner/rings set-up:
    http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...hlight=buckles

I have rigged this on all 3 of my hammocks and really love it. Just got a Speer hammock last Friday and plan to give her a test this weekend. No bug net for the first time. Cant wait.

Biner works really well. Just one wrap around the tree/click biner and your done messing with the tree. At 1oz per biner.

I tried that and I think it is a little suspect. I sewed a loop in the webbing. I wrapped the webbing around the tree and through the loop. After laying in it for one night and for a little testing another time, I think you want to use a biner. The webbing started to stick a little to each other where they met. I think that could cause a weak point in the webbing.

I am going to order the micro biners everyone is talking about and give them a try. I think the convince factor may win out over 2oz in the pack. I am thinking I could use the biners to attach something to the gearskin while hiking anyways.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

Yes, the webbing did seem to almost weld together. I was more or less messing around.

the biners called "micro biners", are the really small ones used on ridge lines, under quilt attachments & stuff.
they aren't strong enough for the hammock supports, but the ones that are strong enough can still be pretty light weight.
i think you probably knew that but i thought i'd just clear up the use of that name "micro biners" for others
BTW... JRB has micro biners & so does backpackinglight.com.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

    great help guys.

As far as the ring combo, do they really secure the webbing that well? I look at the pictures posted and imagine some webbing "roll" in there. Dunno, haven't tried, but I will be looking for them at REI next time I go.
Also, when securing a biner to the webbing loop (boxstitch) does it exert disproportional pull on the sides of the webbing (unlike a d ring where the biner lays flat?)
questions to consider since a d ring could easily be substituted for the biners. it would make set up/take down 1.5 seconds longer.

i really like your ideas JJ (rings). I read the posted when you started the thread and considered it, but had just made some extended tree huggers and thought my life was complete... yeah right!!!

    cheers all
