    Clark Jungle Hammock nx-250

    Hello,

I just purchased a new Clark Jungle Hammock nx-250. This will be my first time backpacking using a hammock, not a tent . I have purchased and installed whoppie slings (Kit).

Since this is my first time, can anyone offer suggestions that will make my first hammock experience a good one?

    Thank you

Get a good full length underquilt. That non-sense about the pockets keeping you warm will get you in trouble. Other than that, set it so that the hoops tip in toward the center, and the foot end 6" to 12" higher than the headend, and have a good night. If you deploy the weather shield be sure to leave it open 6" or so over your head to allow moisture to escape. In Fla. the nights will get warm enough for light underquilt this summer, but for most early spring and late fall as well as winter use, the full length UQ. I have a few hundred nights in one of them, they are great.
If you prepare for failure you will probably succeed.

    Thank you old4hats,

Excuse my lack of knowledge but, what do you mean about the hoops tipping towards the center? I'm going to take it out next week play with it a little. Also, I have a Big Agnes Q-Core SL pad I plan on sleeping on in the hammock. My trip is in August at a place called Kennedy Meadows in Northern California. The night time temps are usually around 60 degrees at night, would I still need a underquilt?

No, above 60 with a pad you won't freeze. Hoops tilting toward center, With the hammock hung and empty, zip closed the bug net and weather shield. The poles should be installed in the hoop sleeves. The most comfortable sag is often found when the two hoops tilt in toward the center of the hammock, and the tilt should be a couple inches off the vertical. This will become very easy to do as you practice setting up. The foot of the hammock will need to be higher than the head end, and trial and error will be your teacher, just remember how it looks after you find that "sweet spot". By all means do play with it before your trip, becoming familiar with it in the privacy of your yard will make it much easier to learn what to do. At the event it is easy to attract helpers who may have never set up a hammock like yours before, so go prepared. I am not familiar with the pad you have, so if it has an air core, you will probably need to pretty much deflate it for max comfort. If you have an issue while there a pm should reach me and I will be happy to assist if I can.

I have the Nx-250 and the Big Agnes 15* Encampment with Q-core and only been down to 20* just fine. Like others said keep the foot end a little higher and the storm shield open a bit. It will work great!

Did you inflate the mattress or put it in flat?
