perks?

What are the perks of a double layer over a single layer if you were to use an underquilt rather than a pad anyway?
I was planning on going with a 1.1 double but then realized that the 1.7 single is lighter and stronger and that the double layer will (I think) be unnecessary with an underquilt.

What are your thoughts?

another perk is possible flexibility. A double layer is somewhat more adaptable in how it is pimped out.For example.. you could slide a pad in and use a lighter weight underquilt if you wantedto deal with colder temps without the added cost of more down.

I weigh 175. Brandon suggested the 1.1 double over the 1.7 double, but then I started wondering about the 1.7 single...fickle fickle fickle me

Your call, but at 225 I'm fine in a single layer of 1.7 or 1.9.

Regardless, I think I'll go with the double 1.1...it seems as though everyone enjoys the flexibility it gives them.

Not in a Blackbird, no. I was just referring to fabric weights in general.
The double 1.1 is a fine choice and it will serve you well.

I just placed an order for a double 1.1 myself.
Coincidently, I too weight in @ 175 ( heading down slowly) and asked these same questions.

In addition to the flexibility and option of using a pad between the layers ( important to me), I have also seen it suggested that two layers may offer slightly more wind resistance as well as possibly more 'Bite through' protection from mosquitoes ?

In reading some of Brandon's earlier posts on his design considerations, he states that in his dual layer system, each layer is structural and this spreads the work load over both thus reducing stretch, stress and strain normal of a single layer.
This should afford ( pardon the pun) an additional layer of security with regard tare through and similar structural damage.

I am getting very excited to receive ours and give it a go .
I am having a special feature added in one of ours that I will discuss in my " Introduction" thread.

I noticed you are located in Tampa. I'm also in Florida and recently received my double 1.1 At 185 lbs., I agonized over the small weight savings of the single 1.7 but finally decided on the double 1.1 because it allows me to fill the gap between the layers with ICE! That's the only way I can camp out in the Florida summer!
