I like to hang all my gear at the foot end of the hammock. I have a Molly Mac Pack which I put on the outside (toward the edge of the tarp). It acts as kind of a weather shield for the rest of the MMP stuff sacks that hang between the pack and the hammock body. If it is really raining the MMP will get wet but then again hiking in the rain will get your pack wet, if it is just a mild sprinkle the pack stays dry under the edge of the tarp.
I attach my pack using an amsteel soft shackle, I carry two soft shackles after an incident where I help carry someone else's pack for them.

I hang my pack from tarp ridge line at foot of hammock. My ridge line is amsteel. I use a short amsteel larks headed onto ridge line and double slip knotted to hold almost empty pack.

I'm using a hammock chair as gear hammock, made by Matt from ukhammocks.co.uk.

It works fine and i like the idea of laying in my hammock and all my stuff is beneath me, save and dry.

Even with down underquilt there is enough space under my blackbird:

That's a pretty cool idea there. I might have to try that.

One can do either waterproof hear hammocks so one does not need to worry or do breathable and keep it under the tarp. The point is that either way it is worth paying attention to keeping the contents dry. A trash bag over a hanging pack accomplishes the same thing.
    YMMV

Haven't seen this yet. I normally carry a folding stool. Once the site is set up the pack is pretty much empty. After I have finished with my foot maintenance I just lay the pack on the stool. Elevated above all the creepy crawlies and out of the water if the creek rises.

Oh, and tucked under the edge of the tarp.

I know this isn't an option for gram whinnies, but I usually take my REI camp chair and use as a nightstand for my pack, shoes, rain gear right beside my hammock, underneath the tarp.

Suspending your backpack from your hammock?

I make a tripod out of fallen sticks and hang my bag off that. Cover with poncho. Done.

Edit- I do also hang off the suspension too when I'm too lazy to build a tripod.

I hang mine from the head end of my suspension. I have a mini-biner on the pack loop that I clip on the suspenion where it rests against the end of the hammock. Allows me access without getting out. Usually my wife and I hang together, so if the rain is going to be blowing bad, I will hang them from the ridgeline of the tarp between the two hammocks. Allows for easy access and keeps everything dry.
