"New" Guy checking in from Missouri

So, I forgot I registered I know. I originally registered based on a couple of people's recommendations. I'm looking for some information on getting a new hammock. I had a Mil-Surp Jungle hammock, which didn't really fit my girth so well Middle of the night there was a loud popping sound followed almost immediately by my backside hitting the ground My buddy who was still awake and saw the whole thing was said it was kind of like in the cartoons when a character runs off a cliff they hang there for a split second and then fall... That was what my hammock did.

Anyway I'm kind of a knife knut and am branching out into other gear. I got a pack that more than suits me now (Large Becker patrol pack) and I got a couple pretty decent sleeping bags (3 season and cold weather). Now I'm looking for a hammock.

Anyway, that is my schpeel. My name is Jared. Nice to meet ya'll.

    Welcome from St Charles, MO!

There are plenty of hammock makers to choose from. I went with a hammock from Hennessy because it was the only one I was really aware of at the time. There's also a DIY section of the forums if you're handy with a sewing machine. Also check the For Sale forum here, you might find a good deal and even if you don't you can google some of the brands that are for sale.

I'd list specific brands, but I'm not sure what the forum rules are on that. Hmmm.... maybe I should read up on the forum rules.

Edit: Go to the forum home page and scroll down. There are whole ton of hammock makers listed there. Not sure how I missed that before.

    • There's a very thin line between a little bit crazy and a whole lot stupid.

So, I'm bumping this with what I'm looking at getting. I figure (hopefully) anyone with experience can chime in. The ones I'm looking at are the Kammok Roo, the Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter Pro, the Warbonnet Blackbird XLC, and the Appalachian Hammock.

If you're a big guy, check out Dream Hammocks too. They also have a calculator to help you determine if you need a double layer hammock and which weight fabric would be appropriate.

Not sure why I didn't update this, as I made this thread LOL!

So I ended up with an Appalachian hammock. I got it in August right before going camping up off the coast of the UP. Actually had the thing shipped to the rendezvous point and the first time I ever saw it was when we got to the island. It was perfect too. It's comfortable, it holds me off the ground, and I don't feel like I'm going to fall. Which is pretty much the only requisites I had for a hammock.
