    Cyclist soon-to-be bikepacking enthusiast

    Hello everone!

I am an avid mountain biker, who bought a hammock to take a nice nap on the trails after my rides. I've found that I really enjoy hanging and now have a hammock in my room fulltime. I have always wanted to get into backpacking.

The hammock got me intrigued and I decided to start camping with it and wanted to combine the two. Come to find out, lots of people do that already.

I am still a noob to the hammock part of it all and all this suspension talk has me in a whirl...

Looking forward to learning a lot. Thanks in advance!

bikepacking is awesome. be sure to go lite on the gear so your bike can carry the weight. 25lbs is a good target weight for short trips. check out salsa bike for some great frame bags and racks. let me know if you have questions. been biking since 1986 and a shop owner since 98.

Awesome, I've considered moving to CO just for the trails.

There is a post in the trip planning section for a 4 day 150mi trip on the Great Allegheny Passage in August, I would love to join in. I'm gonna see if I can't make that happen.

I am hoping to get into bike packing this summer as well. In fact, I just received panniers and a rack for my bike. I also got a computer back pack so that I can commute to work for training.

Unfortunately, after breaking my bike out from winter storage, I am finding it is nearly unusable. It looks fine, but when I ride it, the brakes must be completely locked shut, the chain barely turns, the tires must be flat, rims square, and it turns every road into an approximately 87% uphill grade. It nearly gave me a heart attack in my first two rides. If I had not maintained tip-top conditioning through-out the winter, it would sound like I was out of shape. Hopefully I will make it off the driveway tomorrow.

So let's talk some bike gear...

As I said, I'm an avid mountain biker, but I've never bolted or strapped anything to my bike for longer trips. So what brand/gear/goodies should I look into?

I'm pretty sure I'm going on the 4 day 150 mile ride on the GAP that's posted in the trip planning forum, so let's hear those suggestions!

    Thanks

I think the first thing to decide is if you want bike bags(seat, frame, handlebars) or panniers.

Here's a link to some picts of my kits.

Good call. Personally I've gone with the panniers.

This is a pick from a NEHHA hang last summer in Harold Parker State Forest.

    Have fun out there!
