I know this is going to vary by hammocks but what is the ideal distance between trees? Looking at something to fit between two trees outside my house, thinking I will start sleeping outside for the summer. I've got about 12 feet, is that enough?

That's going to be tight given that many tarps are now 12' ridgeline. That's going to be your biggest minimum limiting factor. If you can go with a smaller tarp you should be able to squeeze in there.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

About 15' is ideal. You can make 12' work fine, it's just not perfect.

Like AS, about 15' is ideal for me.
I measure distance by holding my arms straight out to the size while holding my hiking poles. If I can walk between 2 trees without the poles touching on either side, that is my absolute minimum distance. If there is about 1.5-2 feet between the tree and my hiking pole on each side, that is the perfect distance.

I like 13-14 feet....
Enough room for the tarp....
Minimizes distance for hammock suspension... thus minimizes/eliminates any stretch issues...
Keeps tress close ....Thus it keeps gear hung on them closer at hand.... Also more protection if the wind shifts....

For me, ideal spacing is 5 paces. I figure that is one measuring tool I will always easily have at hand. I am guessing it is 13-15 feet.

Shorter than the length of my suspension ropes/straps.
FF,
As my daughter would have said when she was a teen. "Duh, Dad!!"

Very helpful info. I'm looking at the ENO double hammock, which shows 9' 10" length. Does that include the straps or is that the fabric length?
