I purchase the majority from cottage vendors ( mostly Wilderness Logics and Dutch).
I look at what other HF members recommend as well.
And REI.

Cottage vendors have earned all my business if I do not DIY it

99.9% on line. Even if I go to the store to get it, I find it on line first & have it shipped to the store if shipping to home isn't free. I pay shipping or taxes. Not both. Amazon started charging taxes in my state so, I try to only purchase stuff from their vendors to get around the taxes. The cottage vendors produce good products & I have had pleasant experiences with a couple of them. I never buy or sell used. I always buy new. This way I have some warranty as it may be. If I have excess goods, I give it to my Grandboys.
If i cant diy it then i look at the cottage venders first for most things, then ebay, amazon so on so on
Cottage vendors only, I do not want any mass produced made in China hammock gear if I can help it. So far i've bought my hammock and tarp from Wilderness Logics and just placed an order last night with Simply Light Designs who is located right there in Indianapolis, IN. You get what you pay for and I like to buy it for life the first time.

I use cottage gear for just about everything except clothes. We'll some clothes. I really like ZPacks, hammock gear, golite and dutchware. some of it is expensive but it's made in the USA and being from Detroit I know how important it is to buy American.ps don't buy foreign cars I will lose my job!
im suprised no one has mentioned sierratradingpost.com i buy a lot from them when it comes to my general camping stuff. hammock specific stuff i'd say cottage seems the way to go.
Cottage for me too. They listen to what we want and have crazy good customer service for the most part. Small items like filters, aquamira and such I buy from local businesses. I do buy from backcountry, rei and campsaver occasionally but mostly for clothing items.
I have more to cottage vendors since I became interested and started hanging. So for most my hammock related stuff I get from a cottage vendor or three, everyone from wilderness logics, dutchware, Clark, whoopieslings.com, underground quilts, arrowhead equipment, jacks "r" better, 2qzq, and most recently, Mid-Atlantic Mountain Works.
I like supporting cottage vendors and I find them a lot more responsive to my questions and the stuff is just better made.
For other stuff i will go to REI, EMS, Campmor or Tent and Trails (2 subway stops from my office) if I want to lay my hands on it or Amazon, backcountry, or eBay if it want to buy it online and a cottage vendor does not sell it.
Discretion is the better of valor
I use cottage vendors for the big stuff like hammocks, quilts, tarps & backpacks and of course there's Dutch with his numerous handy items as well as Tinny at Mini-Bull Designs for the occasional alky stove.
Many odds & ends type items (clothes, footwear, ditty bags, dry bags etc.) get picked up at Amazon, REI (online),(D)ick's Sporting Goods, Gander Mountain, Walmart, Kmart etc.
