What do you use for a ground mat to step on?

I used to try to do that - the groundsheet thing.
Now I just loosen the laces on my trailrunners and pull the tongue out towards the toe for 'bedroom slippers' and stick my feet in those when I want to get out of the hammock. My pack hangs from my hammock suspension (with dry rain gear in it). Anything else I have is either food/firstaid/stove in the bear can/ursack/food bag or I'm wearing it. If I have wet rain gear it is on the suspension also. In the unlikely event I have spare clothes, they are tossed in the hammock.
Sometimes, I still bring a scrap of Visqueen plastic just big enough to go under and over my pack, but it is too slippery to try to stand on.

I use the little 5x7 walmart tarp also. Light weight compact. Sit my pack shoes and clothes on it under hammock. If it rains i just pull the tarp over everything. Keeps water splatter off everything. Also handy to have for makeshift poncho or heck a small tarp shelter.

I use the footprint from a two person Sierra Design t***. The size is about 5X7 and could be used as an emergency tarp.

maybe I am missing something, I just sit up, hang feet over the side and slip my shoe, boot, or general footwear on my feet. what is the point of carrying a groundsheet? getting changed I just do that in the hammock or stand on my shoes instead of in them.

In my quest to lighten my load, a ground sheet was the first thing to go (after the 1st backpacking trip). Low utility, high bulk. I have a ccf pad I use for support/structure in my GoLite Jam 50L that I could use for such purpose, but a ground mat just doesn't improve my life enough to use it.

Did you switch the stock pad out, or keep the original?

I've heard the Golite pad can water log.

Jerry chair made from waterproof oxford cloth. I'm already carrying it as a chair, but I can't use it as a chair when I'm in the hammock. Pulling double duty with that one.

My ground cloth doesn't need anything on which to step.

never even thought about carrying anything. i use the bottom of footwear
