Another vote for Tyvek. Also great for laying your stuff on. It is white and things can easily be seen on it. If you cut your piece, use duct tape and apply to the edges to help to weigh it down, so the wind does not blow it that easy.

I use my one man tent pad. It's a DIY one from a piece of a outdoor canopy top. Works great it helps you see things at your feet in the am or if you get up in the dark. I almost stepped on a snake one time and ever since I use one.

like most everyone else i use tyvek too with one twist
i took a 2'x6' piece folded it over and sewed it together leaving one end open so i can stuff my shoes or whatever else i have laying on it incase of heavy rain and have a "waterproof" sack to keep those things dry

Never saw a need for a mat to step on. It's just one more thing to carry and keep track of. I put on/take off my shoes while sitting in the hammock, then I hang them from the suspension. I've heard that porcupines love to nibble for the salt in your sweaty shoes. I've also heard about folks finding all manner of vermin (snakes, spiders, scorpions) in their shoes. I've never had any of these issues, but avoiding trouble is the best way to not have it. Besides, what do you do with your foot mat and shoes when you're hanging in a place that doesn't have flat ground underneath, i.e. across a stream, high up in a tree, on a really steep slope, across a rock crevice. But... I suppose if I were to start using a foot mat, I would carry a piece of Tyvek, large enough to use as a ground cloth on the off-chance I needed to go to ground.

As others have mentioned I use a small piece of a blue tarp. Big enough to hold my pack, shoes, etc. and still stand on.

I always carry a military poncho to throw over my stuff. I use that.
