What do you use for a ground mat to step on?

Seems like (from looking at pics) that a LOT of folks don't use anything at all to step on (ground tarp? small mat? waterproof canvas, about 3' x 4' with sewn on loops for staking out?) when getting out of the hammock or to just lay gear on so that it's not in the dirt/ground/grass/snow. I tried searching for different 'keywords' and didn't see a thread so if this has been covered, forgive my nomenclature ignorance. Anyone have a favorite mat? Preferably something light and not too big. Maybe my answer would be a 6'x6'ish tarp to 'burrito shell' around my gear while I'm away from camp during the day and open it up at night to have a clean step-out spot. Being used to tent camping, I'm not completely savvy to the hanging way of life. I'd just like little more shelter/privacy when hanging in campground or when I don't want to change wet fishing/swimming clothes in front of all the womenfolk...

BTW..as far as gear, I just got my Warbonnet RidgeRunner and a double zip equipped Spindrift sock in the mail this week (trying it out this weekend) and I'm planning on eventually getting a Superfly tarp to aid in the privacy department.

Thanks in advance for your replies...

Tyvek works for me. You can pick up scraps al over the place if you pay attention; buy it at Home Depot or the hardware store; or get some from Zpacks. I got mine from them; it's nice and clean, and seems a little thicker than the little scraps I've picked up here and there. If you want to get ally fancy, you can fold-and-tape it to create a bathtub floor so water won't flow across it.

    Have fun!

I use Tyvek as well. I took a 2 x 6 piece and put grommets on each corner so I can stake it down, it works well. The disadvantage is that it is loud, but that loudness can be reduced by washing it a couple times. Good luck.

another vote for tyvek. I got a large piece off ebay for cheap some time ago, now I would prefer to order from one of our vendors.
    I use either a 2x3 or a 3x4 piece.

I got something in the mail that was in one of those Postal Service tyvek mailers so I cut it open and it's almost exactly the size of a welcome mat (and was free!)

maybe I am missing something, I just sit up, hang feet over the side and slip my shoe, boot, or general footwear on my feet. what is the point of carrying a groundsheet? getting changed I just do that in the hammock or stand on my shoes instead of in them.

I use Tyvek too. Washing and drying it eliminates the noise. Count on 30% shrinkage.

I do that as well but I have used a small ground sheet in the past and I found it nice to stand up on when changing.

When I do use one its a scrap piece of an old tarp I cut up and sewed the edges. I also sewed some elastic loops on the corners if i ever feel like staking it out if there is a lot of wind. I don't carry it backpacking but canoeing I would.

Wally World has a 5x7 ground tarp in the camping section that fold really tiny in a stuff sack. Works for me.
