tarp ridgeline v. direct taught line hitch

    Hi all,
I'm just getting my winter tarp dialed in and wanted some input on ridgelines. I know ridgelines provide easy adjustment of the tarp, is there any other reason to have one for a tarp? Currently I'm just tying directly from the tarp to the tree with an taught line hitch...
    Thanks for the 2 cents!
    Ben

I also tie the ends of the tarps to the trees. I used to use an above the tarp continuous ridgeline but found having prussiks on each end and then having each end go to the trees that I didn't really need the extra cord above the ridgeline. Having a continuous ridgeline below the tarp is handy to hang things to dry and it also adds a little support but my tarp is a Superfly and has a slight catenary curve so setting it up the way I do allows for the slight upward curve. Look into Dutchware for some cool gadgets for setting up tarps.

Since my tarp is a straight cut RL, I use the under the tarp RL to support the tarp. That way, I don't have to have the RL attached high up the tree.

I have always just used taut-line hitches to tie the ends of my tarp to the tree. I have found that with experience, I make little or no adjustments. One reason for this is my tarp is hung before the hammock, so I center the hammock under the tarp. I know some who swear by the ridgeline. There is no right way for everyone, just what is right for you. If your method works for you, then no need to bother with what others do.

This discussion dates back to before hammocks :P Either way is correct depending on your tarp and how you like to attach it. The only real benefit I see to a CRL is if you are dealing with snow and then the CRL will help support the tarp if you run the CRL under the tarp. Other than that, it appears to me to be a matter of preference.

Me? I use a CRL and hang my tarp from it via pussic knots and biners. I do it for ease of adjustments.
