Sewing silnylon ribbon to tarp

So I've got some silnylon tarp, and I'd like to sew a couple of silnylon ribbons into it to tie things to: not into the hem but the middle of the fabric. The ties will likely be taking enough of a load that I am concerned about simply sewing ribbon to fabric, Is there anything I should do to reinforce it?

I would back it with grosgrain as a start on the opposite of the ribbon.

If you want some creative ideas about spreading loads in fabric, check out some info on sailmaking - you might find it interesting. Keeping the result waterproof definitely adds to the challenge.
