    New Jersey To Wyoming

    All,

I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion on where to hammock/camp while on a road trip from New Jersey to Wyoming. I have done this drive a couple of times before and decided I may enjoy life better if I don't sleep in car/crummy motel as I drive across the country. I not against any detours, but hope to make the drive in 2-3 days. Any sites worth detouring for?

    Thanks

    DG

This can be tough, but state parks are a good bet. If you don't know the regulations just be sure to hike a little out of site and try to hit it at dark. The only problem is not knowing the area and the trail heads but a little preplanning can cure that.

Exit 199 off I-80 in PA (signs: "Mile Run, No Services") is surrounded by state forest land. If you hit the area about an hour and a half before dark, follow a gravel road somewhere, pull off at a spot where the hunters do, get out of view of the road and throw up your hammock. Just remember which way you turned on the gravel roads so you can find your way back to I-80.

My wife and I drove to CA and back to PA and hammock camped almost every night. We mainly stayed at state or national parks etc....never had a problem. I never asked if they accepted hammocks and was never hassled. Try not to give the park staff too much to ponder by asking a question they may have never considered. If you assume it's OK...chances are they will too.
