Do you use any bottom insulation for summer hanging?

I have a few scouting trips (some training and some pack trips) and wanted to ask the experts.... do you use any type of bottom quilt or do you just use a sleeping bag? I saw a 40 degree synthetic at wallyworld that I thought about getting and modifying for a summer bottom quilt but wasn't sure if this was even necessary. Thoughts? And as my forum name hints at.... I'm in North Carolina.

    Thanks!

    Jose

I never use bottom insulation in summer because I never go outside in summer!

Even night time temperatures up into the 60's will likely require some sort of bottom insulation. My first year or so, I did fine with one of those cheap blue sleeping pads.

Started using the Wilderness Logics summer series UQ last year and really like it. It was a vast improvement over a pad.

I'm shocked that Mike's some kind of seasonal vampire!

Anyhow, you can either get a CCF, DIY insultex quilt, or buy a cheap kids sleeping bag from REI and cut it up (alternatively you could use a full length women's down coat from value village/salvation army).

If you're car camping you can use carpets or thick blankets for insulation.

It depends on conditions. I've only been hanging a little while but range from Arkansas to New Mexico. In Arkansas I might have done better without any but in the mountains near Ruidoso last summer my 20* full length was just right in rainy, cool weather. Will soon work on the summer UQ that I've been putting off for the lack of sewing skills. It'll be a 44x55" sewn-through of really nice ARGON from Dutch with 5 ounces of down. Need it for my trip to Arkansas in May.

At the least, be able to use your poncho to make a Garlington insulator.

I always use an underquilt or some type of insulation, but I rarely hang when it is over 80 at night.
Keep movin', keep believing and enjoy the journey!

I never hang without an underquilt, why tempt mother nature?
