    Linville Gorge Loop

I'm planning a gorge loop hike (the 22 mile loop) starting from the wolfpit trailhead and going counter clockwise on a full three day hike. I am taking my hammock and I'm hiking with tent campers. I'm concerned that lack of trees on the east rim may be a problem for me and my hammock. It looks like one good days walk near a water source would be near the shortoff mountain campsite. I can always go to the ground, but if that's a real possibility I need to plan accordingly. The underquilt won't do me much good on the ground and my air mattress or ridgerest will work on the ground or in the hammock but its not the most comfortable way to go.

Please give me some comments about hammock use on the east rim and/or suggestions on which insulation to take .... thanks!

Go to the source: linvillegorge.net. They speak hammock-ese there. Plenty of good trees at Shortoff campsite.

+1 for Linvillegorge.net I did that loop last April and didn't run into problems finding trees. Camp near Shortoff and check out the cool water tree!

Hickery and I did the Grand Loop in Linville this past Fall. Could take more than 3 days....counting getting turned around on the NE Quadrant. Be prepared with good maps from linvillegorge.net. You'll find trees on the East side.
It is a tough loop. The Gorge shows no mercy.......
    Carry forth.

+1 on all of the above

The only reliable maps are found on linvillegorge.net.

The ground dwellers will have many more problems than you will finding flat spots enough for tents

And be prepared for rough hiking, It is nothing like maintained trail hiking at all.

Thanks folks. I am experienced backpacker (around 40 years) and I agree that 3 days is pretty ambitious based on looking on the map. My 2 hiking partners don't agree with me so the trip is officially a 3 day trip, although I've allowed for 4. I've got a 4 day weekend and enough food (for me) for 4 days (based on what I've read and seen in videos I'm not all that confident about 4 days). I will share my extra food after agreement is reached that I was right all along... haha! Sometimes experience trumps enthusiasm! Shug, I watched all 6 of your videos and concluded that a hammock is the best way to go based on the territory (informative and entertaining). I returned the ham hocks to Walmart and will opt for freeze dried haggis instead. I've decided to go as light as possible which would have me carrying my DIY 12 oz hammock instead of my TX-250 which weighs a good bit and is bulky (a definite con).

I've still not quite decided on bottom insulation. If I have to go to the ground on the first night my underquilt won't do me much good. But on the other hand, a ridgerest pad or inflatable insulated pad isn't all that comfortable for the whole trip ... any comments or recommendations?

Thanks also for linvillegorge.net link. I knew about it and got my map there. I didn't really want to register just to get this one question answered. I probably will if I survive the trip and want to go back....

Finished the loop! 2.5 day 2 night schedule was brutal. I'd call it a 4 day hike.
