    Gray/green sil 1.50/yd at Little Rock Wal-Mart

For any other hangers in Little Rock: I was bombing around wally world today over on Bowman and found some gray-green sil much like the stuff brandon is using for $1.50/yard on the bargain rack. I don't even have a sewing machine, so I had to stop myself from buying it. There was some other ripstop on the bargain rack as well.

If you are sure it's silnylon I will pay you to buy it and ship it to me.

Well, I don't deal with this kind of thing enough to know for sure. It feels "tacky" like the stuff brandon used for my tarp, and the criss-cross pattern is clearly visible, but it was marked "unknown content" or something like that.

There was some other stuff there I'm pretty sure was ripstop... looked the same but without that "tacky" feeling.

It's very rare that the "silnylon" that Walmart carries in the clearance isle is actually silnylon. I made that mistake. It looks right. It feels right. But it's not right.

It's usually 1.1oz ripstop with a heavy DWR coating that's on both sides - giving it the illusion of silnylon. Oh, and it's usually 4' wide, not the standard 5'.

That doesn't mean what you found is not sil, it's just something to be careful of. If it is actual silnylon... grab it fast! Amazing deal.

The DWR is great stuff for the price, but as a warning, I made 3 tarps with the stuff before I found out I had the wrong material.

If you can blow through it (it will be somewhat hard to do so), it's not sil. If you lick it (I know, gross... licking random things in Walmart) and it just gets wet but doesn't bead up, it's not silnylon. If you strap it over the top of a mug and pour some water in, let it sit overnight, and much of the water has passed through, it's not silnylon - I think you'd have trouble doing this test in the store... Or you can hold it up to a showerhead, if it wets through it's not silnylon.

I just recently had bought some of the wally ripstop dwr. It felt fairly thick and I tested it when I got home by pouring a couple cups of water into a depression in it and seeing how it 'leaked'.
    Did great.

    THEN....

Because I skeeve about manufacturer's coatings put on fabrics (like sizing), I washed this fabric in the tub with a smidge of Sportwash, and layed it out on the lawn to dry.

Well, it sure felt different after laundering !!

Afterward, it felt thinner and it was nowhere NEAR as water repellant !

So, you may want to test out a small piece by laundering and see how it is after....
