    Tarp Pole Options

I have been looking at modding my Superfly with a set of poles. I am thinking of using the easton nanowire poles. Just wondering what kind of mod people are using on their tarps. Inside poles, outside poles or none at all.

Last year I bought an external pole mod from Wilderness Logics and really like the way it opened up the interior of my winter tarp. Last month I bought a dual internal pole mod from Underground Quilts to use with my summer tarp to open it up and give it a more open feel in porch mode. The outside mod works great for opening up the inside space but if I lived in an area that got a good bit of snow then I feel the inside mod would work better for shedding snow from the side of the tarp and give it better structural support.

Everyone ought to believe in something....I believe I'll go set up the hammock!

I prefer using a tieout in the center of the tarp panel if I need it. But I'm a little weight conscious.

i have an outside pole mod i did for my wbbmj that has the same dimensions and pullout placement as your superfly, if you want to check it out send me a pm and maybe we can meet up somewhere, sodakgrrl and i usually go hiking somewhere in the hills most saturdays and would be happy to meet and show you one option

I use outside poles on my Superfly and an inside pole on my Tadpole.
2QZQ sewed the pole pockets onto the middle of the bottom seam on each side of the Tadpole, the Superfly comes standard with the double tie-outs.

With that center pole the Tadpole goes automagically into porch mode if you release the tie-outs on one side. Someone posted a while back about a pull string pivoted off of a stake and operated from the hammock, which allowed pulling the tarp from porch mode to "closed" without even getting out of the hammock! Brilliant.

I've been a inside center pole mod user for years and besides what has already been mentioned is the elimination of any tie out tensioners on the tarp. The center pole acts like a spring on all four corners.

JToon, your thread is timely- I've been thinking about this myself!

2Q: which way does your center pole run? Is it running perpendicular to the hammock? I can't picture how it acts on all 4 corners.... Thanks!

    Yes, it does.
If you look at the picture i posted, the tie outs are placed more in line with the tarp then out from the tarp. The sides of my tarp become very vertical this way and the pole then easily acts like a spring to maintain the tension on the tarp.

I plan on using both in different applications for pretty much all the reasons mentioned by others already. This is a great price on nanolite poles.
