So, if you hang with trees, you can tie up the tarp to two immoveable objects (trees) and then worry about the side tie outs.
however, I need to pitch my tarp with two hiking poles. I've got shock-cord tighteners on all but the center lines. It's pretty disastrous- refuses to stay up.
Any tips? If I can't sort this then I have to sleep on the ground in a tent.

not sure why you can't attach the tarp to the stand or make an attachment device.

ok... if you say so... I guess I can't picture it. I hang my tarp for my stand all the time. Unless you use some kind of tripod/bipod arrangement I am no help.

Right, my Byer stand flexes like crazy when I get in the hammock. A tarp tied to the stand would be way loose after the flex. But I'm not sure why you can't get a good set up? Is it related to having to set the hiking poles too high, so that the tarp can be above the stand height?Originally Posted by titanium_hiker

Take some tubing/pipe/conduit and lash it to the support bar for the hammock stand in such a way that it extends the support farther out. screw type hose clamps would do the trick in my view. You hould be able to hang a tarp of suitable ridgeling length in storm pitch if need be.
I'm a lousy draftsman or I'd do a pic.
ok... I had not thought about the flex.... perhaps a line down to the ground to help offset the flex.

Solution: bypass the tensioners (they are still on the line) and then wedge the pole under the tarp to keep the pole up.
Thanks for the help guys. The problem is the ridge of the tarp- the poles keep slipping out.
