Lightbulb Idea for an inexpensive underquilt using wool batting

So, I am at my favorite fabric store today, just browsing since I am in between hammock projects. I am in the batting section and see that they have wool batting. It is about 3/8" thick and comes 90" wide @ $19 per yard. It got me thinking, how effective would an underquilt be if I made it with ripstop nylon as the outer shell and the wool batting as my insulating fill? I know that wool tends to breath vs. down, but is also very warm. I would have to quilt it in the middle to keep it from moving around. I just think that for weight and space, this might be a path to venture down. To make it more effective, I was thinking of doubling the wood. Before I jumped into this, my wife suggested that I go to the fantastic folks here at the Hammock forums to get your take on it.

    What do you think???
I guess it's a good thing there is no professional help for this hanging addiction!:

I like the idea very much!

What if the "shell" was on the outside only ... to break the wind? (Just thinking out loud.)

Smartwool had a jacket like this but it has seemed to have vanished. Wool is heavy compare to synthetics then down. It should be warmer when wet the even synthetic.
I would be more interested in clothing with UL argon inner and a dwr outer.

I looked into this... found it for $11/lb. It doesn't re-loft after compression, so if you are thinking of taking it hiking.. you'll end up with a matted felt-ish strange looking quilt. sad.

My 1st question would be how far do you plan on carrying it? Sounds heavy to me. If you thinking other than down you may want to consider climashield apex or primaloft which must be ordered.

    Exactly.

If I remember correctly from Latin class in high school when we read Caesar's Gallic Wars, the Roman legions marched each one with a red cape made of wool as their only shelter.

Just a little background, right now I have an old 40 degree sleeping bag that I cut up to be a 3/4 underquilt. It is not very heavy, but it does take up a lot of space. The wool batting I found seemed somewhat light, nothing close to being a wool blanket.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I think I might dive into it and post my results.

The heavy wool blankets are felted wool, which is much, much denser than wool quilt batting. Wool batting is extremely lightweight, compressible, and warm. It would work very well as an UQ filler. (I'm a quilter...)
