    Car Camp Locations?

Can anyone recommend a good place to car camp so I can test out my rig near Fort Worth? Closer the better for this first go. I searched a wee bit but didn't find much. Thought maybe there are some here that have experience in this area. I live near Eagle Mountain Lake if that helps.

I live on south side, so my choices are a little different. If you are looking for developed campgrounds, there are a few state parks around. Also, there is the Corps of Engineers campgrounds at Lake Benbrook (Rocky Creek is closed but all others are open). Trees are hit or miss depending on your spot, but pretty good on the south side parks. Mustang Point has no utilities and also allows primitive camping away from table sites. Plus, one of my best fishin' holes.

Lake Cleburne SP is also a nice destination for a quiet weekend. Fishing is just OK for panfish but nice facilities. With kids, Dinosaur Valley is always good (but crowded).

There are two entrances to Mustang Park. The east one (Winscott Plover Road) leads you to the primitive area that we like (and a good place to fish Mustang Creek from the bank...white bass should be up in the creeks right now). When leaving, I would highly recommend you go east on 1187 to grab a burger (or anything!) at Nicky D's. Worth a few minutes out of your way.

Thanks man... Didn't go out this weekend. I'm in San Antonio and Austin on business this week and my gf is coming so we're going to car camp over Saturday night somewhere in between for my birthday. We're trying to find a place but right now we're thinking McKinney Falls SP.

Mustang primitive will be in my future for a solo if I get all my stuff straight with my gear this weekend though!

Bringing back this thread from the dead to see if anyone knows if you're allowed to camp off of the "River Trail" headed out from Westcreek Circle.
    This site:
    http://www.swf-wc.usace.army.mil/ben...sparks.asp#WCP

says you can camp at Westcreek Circle but there doesn't seem to be very many trees there, plus I would like to take a walk down the trail anyways and wouldn't mind just finding a good place to hang.

Any experience with this area is appreciated!!

    Cheers!

The 'trail' isn't really much, mostly just a foot/horse path that people to use to get access to the West Fork for fishing. Also, NO CAMPING on the trail! Closed sunset to sunrise. (Plus the only people out there are up to no good! I see lots of bottles, beer cans and campfire remains from illegal 'parties' out there while I'm fishing.) It's not a bad walk, but you're mostly just walking along the edge of some trees under the power transmission lines and next to some hay fields. Lots of deer at dawn, though.

Hey FreedomVan. I live in your neck of the woods.(Fort Worth - Border of Saginaw)

This may be a little late, but Fort Richardson State Park is about 50 miles (54) from Fort Worth, as is Mineral Wells State Park (48). Not the "tree-I- est" places. But both have primitive sites with at least two hang-able trees.
Lake Texoma is about 90 miles and there is excellent hanging there. See Cavemans video.

I've not been there yet, but heard Possum Kingdom has good campsites and I believe they are free. The drawback being it's about 100+miles from FTW. Hope this helps.
