    Any Hangers in Japan?!?!

    Hi all
Ive been a long time lurker and hanger.
I will be moving to Nagoya, Japan in 2 months for 2 years.
I am very excited about exploring the outdoors that Japan has to offer.

My Japan work counterparts have expressed that it may be difficult or impossible to hang while backpacking in a lot of areas in Japan.

I am calling on any HF members in Japan who can shed light on the overall backpacking situation in Japan.

    Where do you backpack?
Do you often find yourself camping above a treeline or where there aren't many trees?
If you do, do you set up your tarp/hammock on the ground or tent camp during those trips?

Any additional info about great places to go or specifics about condition etc is much appreciated!

    Yoroshiku onegaishimasu!

We've shipped gear there so there are a few. Hopefully they will chime in here for you with some feedback. GOOD LUCK with the move....
    Happy Hangin'

I lived in northern Japan for many years (Akita Prefecture) and found that primitive camping (go hike up a lonely part of a mountain and make camp) was quite easy. Be very aware of religious sites, respect farmlands, ask permission (asking has led to more than one diamond-in-the-rough campsites) and watch out for wildlife (in the north, there are still forests "owned" by odd bear-dog animals).

I can't tell what the situation is like because I haven't camped here yet. But I've ordered a set for myself and will be hanging around central Japan for all of August. So if you want to, we can meet up for the smallest group hang ever sometime.

Odd bear-dog animals? Why don't you start a thread on these or add to the Without Merit thread? I'm curious.
Keep movin', keep believing and enjoy the journey!

I have ordered a set as well and used it on my balcony one cold night before summer hit. I would love to do a mini meet up hang with yall. I have yet to venture out to find any diamonds. I am located on the far east side of Tokyo. About 30-40 mins to the nearest mountain range. Just met someone who knows quite a few locations and will be absorbing as much knowledge as I can from him.

Yokohama-shi here. Should have my setup by next weekend, or the one after that at most. Sure, let's go hang somewhere.

Sorry with the move and all I have not been on here as religiously as I usually am. Looks like both you guys (BigJon and Tobl) are pretty far east. Maybe we can still meet up some time between us for a hang. I just got topos for the Gifu area, The Northern Alps and the Southern Alps. I am working on getting some good trail maps and verbal trip reports from some locals I work with who backpack.

I was talking to a local and asked his favorite place to camp and he said the Japanese national forest. The one he was talking about is in Nagano. It is about halfway between us also at higher elevation so less bugs. I will try and get more information about it from him. We may be able to get a end of summer Japan hang in! WOOOOO!!!!!!!

I think e_2 might be talking about Tanuki sometimes translated as raccoon dog
