tried searching. need a quick hit.

have a double layer my ccf pad is uncomfortable between the layers.. I know that an underquilt is ideal but could a synth. sleeping bag serve the same purpose as a pad between the layers? I know it crushes the fibers and thus lowers the insulation factor due to no air pockets.

but for summer camping would it suffice?or is it truly useless?

Depends on the bag and the type of insulation it uses, but it could work. Especially for warmer weather. Only way to find out is to test it I think.

nI'm thinkin low 30s overnight. 0deg bag underneath. 20deg bag on top. double layer 1.7 hammock... in summer I'd be looking at a 20g under and a fleece bag liner on top for the mid 50s

Doubt that will work for low 30s, but again worth a try. It sounds like weight and pack size are the least of your concerns if you are bringing all that, so I would bring insulation that doesn't compress instead. Think wool blankets and the like.

Yes, how ever...how low you can go will depend on several factors, how warm/cold it is, wind and are you a cold or warm sleeper. Best to test under controlled conditions.

I used a TQ in my double layer BB one time when I grabbed it instead of the UQ. I make sure my TQs and UQs are not same colors now to solve that problem. Got down to high 40's that night. I was a bit cool that night but on whole comfortable
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

Depends on summer temps, moisture in the air etc. hot or cold sleeper try giving it a shot. You could try a reflectix bubble wrap sheet/ windsheild reflector. I bring one with me to supplement my underquilt if temps drop, sit pad, or to let the dog sleep on. you can make it as big or little as you want. it will be lighter and pack down smaller than a ccf pad.

DIY underquilt from poncho liner or military partol bag, both great for summer.

To add to youbet's comment, my friend in the Marines has a double lay in his pack and rather then modifying his poncho liner into any under quilt he just folds it an half and slides it into his hammock. The coldest he used in was the high 40s but he said he was plenty warm.

I've heard of people doing this and tried it myself. I consider myself somewhere in the neutral zone when it comes to the cold to hot sleeper scale, and I found it too cold at 50 when it was my only bottom insulation. I'd imagine it might work if also in a synthetic bag and some decent layers on or for hot sleepers.
