Hi everyone!
I've been lurking for awhile and finally decided to make an account. I love camping and backpacking, but HATE sleeping on the ground even with "good" options (e.g. air mattress, etc.). I decided to take a blind plunge for a hammock rig. I have an ENO single nest hammock, Atlas straps, an ENO bug net, and a AHE hexagonal tarp.
I took my almost-four-year-old girl camping this weekend and brought the hammock along. Alas, I had to sleep in a tent with her as she's too fidgety for hammock at this age. We did get to rig up the hammock (SO FAST!) at the campsite as well as up on a hiking overlook. I knew as soon as I laid down in it that I had made the right choice. No more ground sleeping! Yay!
I plan on making an UQ using cuban fiber and wool quilt batting. It will be lightweight, compressible, and very warm. I am crafty and quilting is another hobby of mine, so I'm glad to see where those two worlds collide. The quilts I have made with a single layer of wool batting are SO light and very, very warm. I think I will put a double layer in the UQ for a little extra airspace and loft. (edited to add) I have a down sleeping bag that I intend to use as a blanket on top, with the footbed zipped up to keep my feet cozy.
Question: In the meantime, it's getting to be summer down here in central Texas - would an all-weather blanket (like this one:http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/57230...utdoor-blanket) that is water and wind-proof and fleece-lined work as a liner to avoid the draftiness at nighttime? I know I don't need an UQ for Texas summers (and most of the spring/fall, for that matter), and I haven't seen any mention of this despite looking. Thanks!
Enough ramble. I look forward to getting to know everyone here.
