    I Just Need To Whine

I think I left my straps on a pair of trees in Damascus last week. I have two pairs, and now I seem to only have one. I can make more out of nylon webbing for this weekend, but my roll of polypro is fresh out.

It's a cautionary tale for anyone as absent-minded as me; use a checklist to pack up at home AND at camp.

Feel free to whine. I'm one of those people who always seems to leave something behind. Skydog checks my site when he's with me and often comes up to me smiling with something of mine. He handed me a tree hugger on one of our first trips together.

Don't feel bad. We all have our stupidity moments. I bolted out of town on Wednesday to have a relaxing two and a half day jaunt only to arrive at my destination a few hours later without my boots. The only thing that would of been worse for me to forget would of been my hammock.

I am so glad I ain't the only one what does that.

Havn't actually done the "Left the straps behind" thing, , , , yet.

But, I have had to walk miles to go back & get important stuff I did leave behind.

AND, likely will do it again.

    I never do that.

You guys should quit dropping/leaving things on the trail....

(Inside joke for recent Mt Rogers attendees...)

Do a grid walk, patrol the area and secure the perimeter.
I always find all that left behind stuff. My mis-matched tent stake collection is amazing!!!!

Leaving stuff behind is not limited to camping.

When I was teaching scuba I used to search the dive site to collect gear people had set down and take it back to the shop for them to retrieve later.

After the students were done diving for the day, my dive master and I used to race to the bottom of whatever mudhole we were diving that day and pick up all the watches, knives, etc (stuff new divers just had to have to be cool) from the bottom.

leaving stuff behind, I think we all do it. I have to "remind" myself to look around before I leave my camp site. When I'm with the scouts, we have them do a "sweep" before we leave. That takes care of the stuff they left and any trash on the ground. One of my worst problems is getting to the campsite and realizing that I've left something at home. I really hate that. I do like when I find useful items at the camp site!!!

Thanks for the support everybody. I found my straps late last night cavorting in a bin of kayak straps. Nevertheless, I'm sure I'll leave them behind sooner or later.

Yea, The stuff left behind/dropped at Mt Rogers, (for me: 2 tin whistles) wasn't. It (the bag they were in) was somehow hiding in my pack. It was IN the pack I litterally dumped out 3 times, & did not find. The 4th time I dumped it out (after having given up on ever finding them again) They plopped out, FIRST!!! They were ON TOP!!
Inanimate stuff can be so perverse. I swear they spent some time alone at Mt Rogers & decided to go home.
