Other than esthetics I can't figure why go to this much trouble, BUT, based on other projects you have tackled, I will be surprised if this thing doesn't work, and work well at that. As usual waiting for visual confirmation.

I expect this will be lighter than those made with 2x material and gate hinges. I've gotta keep things light due to injuries.

I'm not sure if you are planning to cut the tripod legs prior to lashing them and giving it a try, but I would recommend against that and leave them full length. All the "calculations" probably won't quite figure how the legs, lashings, angles, etc. are really going to come out. You can cut them off later but it's a bit problematic to add any back.

What do we call the cord at the bottom that will keep the legs from splaying?

That cord is called a limiter. I would worry about the ridge pole connection, if it bows, to cause the ends to split. Just a thought....RR

Yes, my thoughts exactly. It's the compression angle that is critical. I'll have to do a good job of whipping those ends. Even at that the bamboo may not work. I've got an 18' long piece of nominal 2x redwood drip molding as a back-up plan. But would sure like to have a 2" piece of bamboo that long.

You picked up another reader on this one. I'm a scout leader that has been working to get our troop into hanging. Some camporee we do are in open fields. Lite weight stands would be great. This also is a great lashing project for the boys. Keep us posted.
