I like the Marilla trail head. You could park there and just go get lost in the woods on that side of the river.
It will be our first time there. We could do the full trail over a 2 day weekend sometime. But hiking is weird. My wife and I are runners (running our first marathon this weekend). To us, 23 miles spread over 3 days sounds ridiculously easy paced. But after hiking Hawaii's Kalalua Trail and Puna Trail to Apua Point in Volcano National Park for our first overnight hikes, we discovered hiking miles does not equal running miles!
That said, the hikes in Hawaii I am guessing is a bit harder than most. Kalalua is listed as one of the top 10 dangerous trails in the world!
So it will be interesting to see how hard or easy it ends up being.
Yeah it's always anyone's guess. I only did it once; starting at Marilla TH and heading south down the NCT side. Arrived around 5PM and hiked a couple hours then camped. Did half of the rest Saturday, the next half Sunday. I really blew up my left knee, which never hurt in my life. Going down hill just really did a number. Fortunately I had a few Advil tablets which helped, but the last 10 miles were very painful. Felt fine after about 24hrs. My daily running/cycling never came close to this pain. I still blame it on the down hill hikes.
Ever been to the Nordhouse Dunes area? That's another great place in the Manistee area for a quick camping trip as well (and pretty secluded as well).

We haven't yet. Need to find some good overnighters in SW Michigan.
I might be interested in going, I have that Saturday and Sunday off, but not that Monday. But I could hike out on Sunday instead of Monday.... Maybe I will have to look at the map a little better and see. How many miles are you thinking each day? I have been having some knee trouble so I would have to make sure that I can handle it...I should know within the next few days weather the knee is getting better or worse. So you could put me down as we will see maybe...
Ok so I just reread your post and you did say the miles you would do each day. I still need to look at the map better, doesn't show up to well on my phone
Anyone have directions to the trial head from Indiana (69)?
Directionally challenged...comicly so.
Not all who wonder are lost...But I'm probably just lost.
I was up there last year. From Ft Wayne, I headed up I69 to 94 West. Take 131 North up to exit 168. Then the zig zag starts - North on 200th up to M55, then turn north onto 37. West on 34-1/2 Rd, north on Warfield, West on Coates Hyw. After a mile or so, the TH will be on your right just over the bridge.
Be careful not to park "for free" on the river (south side of hwy); DNR was giving tickets when I was there because backpackers were using up all the spots and fishermen with boats couldn't launch.
Another option, which I may try next time, would be 131 > US 10 > 37 for a more direct route.
