Upstate New York - Watertown, Syracuse

Uncle Sam in all his wisdom decided to send me to Fort Drum near Watertown, NY for a few years. What's the hanging and hiking scene like way up there?

Its great. St Lawrence is like an ocean river with great fishing. And just east is the Adirondack park. Love me some upstate NY....

Get dry for cold long winters tho.

Well, if Uncle Sam is gonna stick you in the boonies, you've got some mighty fine boonies to explore: Adirondacks, Catskills, Finger Lakes, Great Lakes and Canada is not too shabby!

Hey new neighbor. There are a few trees to hang in! Let me know when you are settled, we can organize a hike.

Thank you for protecting us, you are a hero!

Here are a few samples to give you an idea of what is available.

As mentioned the Adirondacks will be basically your backyard. They are perfect for hammocks.

Backpacking the Adirondacks was what got me interested in hammocks with the pressure on designated campsites and the rocks, roots and often wet and uneven ground, I was fantasizing being off the ground.. The adirondack park is one of my favorite places on the planet.

Cold winters and required bear cannisters are the only down sides. The Daks require the use of hard side bear cannisters in many areas. But both of those can be dealt with.

Not sure about the camping situation, but Letchworth State Park is a beautiful hiking spot.

Letchworth is quite a ways from Watertown. It is gorgeous though.
