    Cool AR Park Hanger

    Hi!
I'm Brandy, and I have a confession: I've had a Hennessey Hammock for a little over 7 years. I've only used it twice. Sad, right?
I didn't know the name for it at the time, but I had been a victim of CBS. Between my cold nature and suffering from the idea that camping & backpacking could only be done in groups of 2 or more, I didn't use it after those first 2 trips. Daydreaming doesn't count.

I recently decided I wanted to visit all 52 of our state parks,(I work for parks, so I've got a decent head start) and that my hammock would be the most convenient way to camp in them. So I read "The Ultimate Hang," learned about CBS, and more importantly, how to prevent it.
It also led me here. Yay! I've been lurking for a couple weeks now and I have learned tons. Some things are still confusing (silnylon, wha?) but I'm getting there.

I'm hoping to soon take on the project of making my own cheap underquilt.

So HI! Thanks for everything I've learned so far, and all that I'm looking forward to learning.

I'm also from Arkansas ! Up in the northeastern area . Sounds like an awesome goal of hitting all the parks.

If you haven't yet you may want to check out Backpacking Arkansas forum.

CBS is Cold Butt Syndrome loss of heat through the bottom of the hammock from either not having insulation or from insulation being compressed between you ant the hammock body

Ah, Yes, I may indeed have a cold butt then if I don't order the underquilting. Working on that right now.

More Arkansans, all right! Once you break down and buy an underquilt there can still a learning curve to getting it adjusted so it doesn't let in cold air but once you get it sorted out it's great. I've had good luck staying warm using a pad as well, it just tends to move around under you and need readjusting during the night.

An easy and inexpensive underquilt option is one made from a doubled over poncho liner, plenty warm for 3 seasons in Arkansas. Search poncho liner underquilt (PLUQ) for DIY sew or no sew options. Enjoy!

Thanks! They have directions for that in the Ultimate Hang, and I saw some YouTube videos. I think I'm going to do something similar. Unless I find a cheap poncho liner, then I'll do almost exactly that. I'm playing with a way replicate the bottom opening of my Hennessey.
