    recycling material to save money

I was just thinking about how it is often possible to save money for the diy prodjects that you are doing by buying cheep products that have the matirals in them for instance buy a cheep fleece sleeping bag liner and you get a cheep zipper. What other ways do you guys save money by resicling parts of products. Im espeshaly looking for sill nylon but any thing you guys have found would be cool to hear about.

Hi, I have been known to go to thrift shops and two dollar shops and buy all sorts of things, like small cell phone carry packs, then go home and cut off the small plastic hooks and snaps and use them on other diy gear.

    Lots out there.

moms kids dads hammock 006.JPGActually just did this, tore apart an old dome tent, cut up the rainfly and made it into a hammock rainfly. Price was right, and it let me learn the "we make gear" motto. Works well, neede to be larger. I plan on trimming more fabric from tent and enlarging fly. Plan on making tub floor from tent into a pad to stand on while getting in and out of hammock. Possibly use fabric or floor as storm sheild.....hmmm, options are endless. I also saw a few tents at the local garage sales. Kids backpacks are a good source of clips, straps, d-rings, etc., I didn't use the Barney backpack fabric...yet.

I don't call it recycling. I call it salvaging. In keeping with the fact that most of what I have is past the point of garbage. My wife cringes every time she sees me rummage through the stuff she wants to throw out.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Also, as soon as one of the kids backpacks are worn out I cut off all the buckles, Ladder locks and so on.

    Have fun

I tend to be more of a 'salvage' guy myself and thrift stores just plain rock! You can get good insulation out of $5 sleeping bags and you can even use the fabric shells in most cases. One of my first DIY uqs was made in that fashion. Lots and lots and lots of little clips and doodads to be found in the thrift shops too! There is often bug netting (not no-see-um), coffee cans (can you say stove fun) and all kinds of good stuff. Just start walking the aisles and let your imagination wander. You'll be amazed at what you find.

I am thinking about using the fabric from a big tent to make a tarp. It would even have the windows on each side.

I my son doesn't get his tent packed back up and off the garage floor in a pile, I might let you rip it up...

Nice ideas. I am going to have to start rummaging since I know the kids go through a backpack or two a year. I think they must drag them around like cavemen.
