I have a question, it's probably inanswerable but I'll ask anyway...

What are the various rip/tear/max weights on the different fabrics? Like the 1.1/1.6/1.9/2.2 ripstops, and the 420/300D fabrics?

I also have a question regarding the rip/tear max weights, etc.

I'm in Bali and there is no such thing as Silnylon here. There isn't any odourless mineral spirits. There are no bungees. Yet, I'm going to make a hammock with whatever I can get my hands on.

However, even the material sellers and importers have no idea what "Denier" means (and they are the experts!!!), so the material I've found, which may or may not be ripstop nylon, needs testing first.

So, exactly how does one test the breaking strain of fabric?
I guess I can take a strip of it and load it with kgs until it fails, right? But does the industry test a 'specific size/shape' of material, e.g. 1 x 1m?

    Anyone know?

    Thanks in advance.

Chameleonbear I can't answer your question but some manufactures have comfort rating charts to use as a baseline. I know Dream Hammock has one on their site.

JJBrewbus, Hopefully someone knowledgable can jump in and give more insight. Until then here is a link that may be useful as a starting point.
