I have a question for the fabric sellers as well as our vendors.
Is permethrin safe for use on all of our prized possessions?(silnylon tarps, ripstop hammocks, etc)

I don't treat my tarp. It's resistant to water so it probably wouldn't be very effective and not really sure why you would treat your tarp.
I typically treat my straps, hammock and all clothes including hats but exclude socks and underwear. That's just my personal choice. I wear pants hiking year round, so my legs are covered. I've never heard of anyone having issues with treated fabric.

I treat all my hammocks and hiking clothes.
I buy the permethrin in a quart size bottle, mix into a dedicated pump sprayer, set up the hammocks and clothes in the back yard, spray and let air dry. So far no problems other than the permethrin I have leaves a slight odor ( not bad or good ) that takes about a week to go away.
Some people mix in a large bucket and dunk the hammocks and or clothes and then let dry
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
Why wouldn't you treat socks? Just curious?
What brand do you guys use? Tractor Supply in my area has a few different brand names, some are petroleum base...and I found ne hat was water base....I'd like to treat my bug net and aren't sure which brand.

I use the Sawyer spray.
I soak my stuff overnight in a stronger mixture. I also wear treated pants year round that come down past the top of my boots. Most of my hiking these days is off trail so the pants help keep the thorns, briars, and bugs off.
I've never had a tick or chigger on me. So if it's not broken.....
I think this is what I ordered last time.

For 0.5% it says to dilute 6.7 oz per gallon of water and I used 8 oz per gallon.

As others have noted. No need treating the tarp but everything else gets it. I have used the dunk method previously but will be doing with my sprayer this time. Hard to wring all that stuff out after dunking then it takes so long to dry.
This, I have heard, is due to glandular absorption (not even using the proper term there probably) in your nether regions and under your feet and armpits. There is some research on the matter but nothing conclusive with direct reference to this use question. It boils down to personal preference and what you feel your risk limits are. I don't feel the need to treat my skivvies but I will do my socks. I hike in a kilt now and wear long sock with it so it goes to keeping the buggers off me. Exposed skin gets a treatment of Picaradin spray. I stay tick, chigger, and mostly mosquito free when I hike. Your results may vary.

I dunk my hammock, pants, shirts and socks.
Not my tarp or straps, no need to kill an innocent passer-by on the tree trunk.

OK, thanks for the info regarding the sock issue and various brands (with links) you guys are using. I think I'm gonna start by just doing the bug net and use Picaradin for the rest....Thanks again.
