Never felt the need for the shelf. just added space IMHO.

Love the TB, I have a 10 foot, very comfy and can be full topless in the cold season, not just rolled off to the side.

Switching to a NSS, "no shelf situation" doesn't bother me, as much as I do like the shelf, because swag bags, peak bags, ridgeline organizers all pick up the slack just fine.

What I'm wondering is, is it possible to zip the over cover down a bit and then bring the netting zipped up from the other end such that you can create a little shade over the head end while having the bug netting for the rest of the hammock. That's what I want to check out at the Round Valley gathering. Because that would be the mutt's nuts. I'm sure it's a comfortable lay, need to experience it but I have a high level of confidence going in, but the features are what draw me to it versus a diy tablecloth setup.

Or you could drape something over your bug netting above your head for shade? That seems like a simpler solution.

Not sure about being able to zipper something starting at the head end, which I think is what you are trying to achieve. I will have to check that out when I'm back home again.

That's what I do now but the breeze always knocks it back into my face, which disturbs my siesta. So I end up using a baseball hat.

The cover/net on the Thunderbird on zips on one way, from foot towards head end.

The Dangerbird doesn't allow you to completely remove the net or cover, but since they share the same track you technically can unzip one part way and zip the other up partially. Not sure how well it works, or what kind of gap is introduced - but PapaSmurf has said it's possible.
