On our 2011 SoBo, my wife and I both used our hammocks until Damascus (which I believe was around Nov 1). A regular hammock tarp was fine for both of us. Actually we carried just one of our hammock tarps for the post Damascus section as our shelter, and it worked well.
We slept in some heavy heavy down pours that year in the hammocks....and stayed dry. They were DIY cuben tarps that were a little longer at 12'.
We would have stayed hanging, but needed the under quilt warmth more than anything, and as we got into the cooler temps needed something warmer than what we had...so we went to ground rather than making the purchases of winter UQ.
If I were to do it again SoBo, I'd buy the a warmer UQ for the end of the trail, and stick with my standard tarp.
