    Shock cord "splicing"

Here's the situation. I'm trying to rebuild a tent pole for an external pole mod. The original thought was to just cut the pole in half and use each half for the two external mod poles. The problem is that I need to add a section to one of the halves to make it work, thus one of the shock cords will be too short. Just replacing the shock cord seems to be out of the questions as the ends and inserts seem to be glued in. I don't think there is enough room inside the tube for a fisherman's knot. So. what I'm proposing is overlapping the two pieces of shock cord by 1/2-3/4" and whipping them together with some thread. Do you think this would work?

Shock cord becomes smaller in diameter as it is stretched and might tend to creep out of the whipping.

I suggest leaving the shock cord longer on the side that has a section added. You can stretch it out and check before cutting, but I'm guessing you can get by with one added section.

I cut the existing ends off of mine when I did a pole mod and used new ends with the eye for tying on the cord.

I'd make a lot of effort to put in new shock cord, but it sounds like your poles won't allow that...

I have joined shock cord with whipping twine (not thread) and constrictor knots (tightened with marlinspike hitches and a couple of dowels for handles) and it works, but I wouldn't guarantee that it doesn't cause a weak spot in the cord.

How much did you have to cut off? I guess I could do that. I had already planned on using that type for the new ends. I don't have the side pullouts on any of my tarps yet, so I can put them where ever is needed for the pole length.

On the first one, I cut the length of the insert off. Then I learned that only a portion of the insert makes the compression fit and cut less on the second. These are Easton Nano poles bought from the Ebay deal that was posted some time back.

Yup, those are the same ones I have. 3/16" is an acceptable loss.

That had crossed my mind. I think I might just modify the pole like gmcttr did just to reduce the fiddle factor.

The sheath certainly could be sewn; I don't know about the (parallel-strand) core, though...
    We need experimental data!
