Anyone tried using moving quilts for an underquilt?

I picked up a "moving quilt" form Harbor Freight for $4.99 a couple months ago - to potentially use for some other purpose - but got to thinking - has anyone attempt to use one of these as an under quilt for their hammock? This thing was 4' x 8'. There are some in the 8x10 size for about $9.

I know it's not light - but it is cheap. Four grommets - one on each corner, and use some cord or bungee cord to "gather" it up on the ends and sling under the hammock.

    Anyone tried this method?

I know it's summer, and this may seem pretty - "redneck" - but the price appeals to me greatly. I've had to enter the great group of the "underemployed" the last couple of years - so money is an issue (ok - it's always an issue, but...)

I don't care if it's "redneck" this seems like a good idea...but I'm still new to all this.

As long as it keeps you warm and you don't have to carry it, it works.

I don't know about the moving quilts you have, but mine are so heavy and a bit stiff, that it would be very difficult if not impossible to get them seal properly. I would look for something more adaptable like a cheap sleeping bag or surplus poncho liner.

Yeah - it is pretty stiff. This one is - relatively light - I guess. Just looking to use something I've got, rather than something I don't. I won't have to worry about this until later - but might be going elk hunting in Colorado in Sept. Might come in handy a couple nights there, based on what I've experienced in the past.

Oh, and please no one take offense at the "redneck" comment - I are one. Mostly.

I do have some Harbor Freight moving quilts and agree, too dense and heavy, at least for backpacking. A surplus poncho liner (I have and use one for a summer top quilt and am about to buy and convert another for an under quilt) would be far better.

Where are you getting your poncho liners? I found some at the Fairgrounds Flea Market, $25 ea and they were in pretty good shape. You got a cheaper source?

Check eBay, I got 5 for $50 there and they were in good shape. Just be careful who you get them from. Good luck.

I think $25 each is a pretty good price. I paid less for the one I have, but it had a defect on one end.
