    GSMNP Campsite #73 Lone Pine

I'm planning a paddling trip on Fontana and I'm curious about campsite #73. Its boat in only but I haven't been able to find any more information than that. Does anyone know anything about it?

I've stayed at Double Island (#78) before and enjoyed it. I've thought about Jerry Hollow (#87) but I have the impression that its always busy there.

I'll be going next week during the week for what thats worth.

    Many thanks in advance.

they're both pretty much the same.
the coolest site on the lake is 87 at the mouth of eagle creek.

as far as boat traffic, it's hit or miss on that lake.
i've paddled there sometimes on the weekend in the middle of july and have the entire lake to myself.
before the ridiculous permit/reservation system came into play, i used to stealth camp all along that lake.
    especially up into eagle creek.

other than site 90, it seems like most boaters stay on the sites on eastern half of the lake.
during the week you should be okay.

Joey - thank you for your input. You made be reconsider #87. I looked at the permitting website and it looks like there is a limit of six campers and there are four spaces available. Do you know if you can spread out there or does everyone camp close together?

I think I'll wait until the last minute to get my permits so that I will have a better idea of which sites have fewest reservations.

a trail runs along the entire ridge.
as you hike up from where you leave the boat on the east side of the island, the campsites are just over the top of the hill.
but there are a few more places with fire rings just down the trail.
and there's one almost at the end down by the water.

i really dislike that new, and needless, reservation/permit system.
we've found that people, and one particular guide service, book sites then never show up to use them.
you'll hike past one that's supposedly booked up, and nobody's there all night.
it really has put a kink in the freedom to x-c hike across the park.

Thanks again for your input Joey. I dislike the new reservation system too and thats very bad form for anyone to book a spot and not show up. I imagine its hard to do much about though. I would love to just get in the water and paddle where I feel like and spend the night wherever that is. I guess I could do that on the National Forest side but from what I've seen it tends to be a bit scruffier over there and has less feeling of isolation than the National Park side. In the grand scheme of things these are good problems to have I suppose.

I've been working really hard over the last month or so and may just set up in one place for three nights and laze around and take a few trips from my there.

    JoeyB, long time no see

Hangnout and I saw that happen last June. We tried to book #84 but it wasn't available so we booked # 83, no big deal. We come down Jenkins Ridge dog tired and 83 is empty - maybe everyone is arriving late. As we walk by in the AM it's still empty.
