Are weather shields needed for the down UQs. Im assumming that in a bad rain spash could get on the underside of the UQ, ruining it for a good while til it dries. Whats the consensus?

One good solution is a Dri Ducks poncho, which doubles as a weathershield.
Check at the JRB site for specs.
The fabric works GREAT ! AND ! It also is great for weather where it's too warm for a pad or underquilt, but you need a little something under you!
Under an adequate tarp weather shields are not normally required, (UK, Scotland, Washinton state excepted)..
UQ are normally made with a Durable Water Resistant (DWR) nylon and are thus not effected by rare drops or occasional slash.

Agree with Pan - weather shields aren't needed in most conditions. I occasionally get some splash on my underquilt, especially when I'm hanging under the same tarp as my son, and it hasn't affected my warmth yet. I just try to air out the underquilt longer the next day.
In a very foggy environment, where you can see the rolling fog come in, I might use one though. And in the summer time you can probably get by with just a weathershield and a sit pad for some trips.
