    Lightweight Hammock with pad sleeve?

hey all -- i'm a backpacker, based in the southeast. i spend most of my backcountry time on the Cumberland Plateau and Blue Ridge Mountains. i'm currently using an ENO Double Nest, Warbonett silny tarp, and a sea-to-summit nano bug net. i'm looking for ways to lighten up without spending a lot of money, if possible.

i wonder if you guys could recommend a lighter hammock. are there any out there with a pad sleeve that aren't too pricey? i use a down underquilt for the cooler seasons but it's a bit overkill for summer trips. my CCF pad keeps me cozy down through the 50s, but it sure is a pain in the neck. is there a hammock out there that's lighter than my ENO (22oz) and has a pad sleeve? or does the extra material for the sleeve negate any weight savings?

    i appreciate your help,
    ashe

The short answer is yes, there are lighter hammocks out there.

    What's your budget?

A double layer 1.1 Warbonnet Traveller will run you around $75. It's a basic gathered end hammock, and with suspension is probably under a pound.

If you're willing/able to DIY, you can do it for at least half that.

Look at the SimplyLightDesigns.com TreeRunner DL. For a double layer hammock - which is what you're talking about with pad sleeve - its about as inexpensive as I've found.

p.s. bridge hammocks have actual "sleeves" and are excellent with pads, but I think they're all more than you want to spend.

You can try a DiY and with 5 yards of fabric you make an 11' hammock (the first 4 yards) and the 5th yard you sew a pocket to the inside of the hammock that is a yard long to keep it in there.

hey, i'm sorry i haven't responded. i really appreciate the tips. i just took the plunge and bought myself a double layer Traveler and the Travel Net. This shaves like a pound and a half off of my ENO set up, which i'm pretty pysched about. and i get a mechanism to hold my pad in place as a bonus.

1.5 pounds, that's awesome! You might be able to tweak your hammock suspension as well as your tarp rigging to save some more ounces.

the provided suspesion is whoopies plus some webbing for the tree strap. and i guess i'll need a 'biner or something to connect the two. any ideas for improvement? i just placed my order so i haven't even laid eyes on the setup just yet.

i got a trip coming up in a few weeks. i'll post a trip report/review when i get back. i gotta get my post count up so i can sell off my ENO setup

Take a look at some Dutchware for some uberlight hardware for suspension, tarp ridge, etc.
The road to success is always under construction.

Check out Wilderness Logics! The Light Owl is double 1.1 and is only 20 oz. and the Snipe single layer 1.5 is 18 oz. both complete with whoppie slings and tree straps. Marty and the team are great!!!!

Hammock bliss sky bed bug free has an actual sleeve for a pad (not just a double layer) and an incorporated bug net plus a very flat lay. It's heavier but incorporates the bug net so may work out lighter?
