    YMMV
If your the type who just likes to buy something instead of making something, hese are what I use, because I need them for other boating purposes.

Get two or more of the small ones and grind one of them to a much more pointy end. If all you are doing is 1/8" or smaller, just get one and grind it. These are easy to make out of a BBQ skewer, bronze/aluminum tubing, or knitting needle. All you need is a hammer and a Dremmel tool to cut the opening. Adding heat from a propane torch helps the hammering if you are making it out of a skewer.

I love the Selma fids. The 3/16" works great on 1/8" but you can't get it though most 7/64" stuff. I use this one almost all the time.

Thanks for the links, nacra. I do usually prefer to make rather than buy but my tools are 900 miles away.

No pictures of the sling on my hammock yet, but here is a shot of my homemade fids.

I was just thinking about the guitar strings this morning. Take a pair of needle nose and roll the "ball end" out of the loop, and I think you'll be done. It should work just like the doubled wire that Custom Splice mentioned.

I was waiting until after work to try this, but since you mentioned it!

Not that kind of music wire! That's what they call it in the hardware section, right next to the round stock that I bought. Piano wire. Guitar strings would stick, and aren't stiff enough.

I think the low E string may work just fine when pushing the loop end through the constrictor section, and then pulling the loose end of the amsteel back through. Not that I need more fids, but this is "addictive".

Oh shucks... Well, I'm pretty sure the Gore Elixirs won't stick -- they have a Goretex coating. They do have a mind of their own, though, I'll grant ya that!.

I stand corrected. Old guitar strings would probably work real well, and give you another use for a broken, stretched out string. This is addictive.

Exactly what I had in mind, Ken. -- great minds, etc...

You could make one heck of a bury, too...
