After spending an hour playing with the different DIY fids, my essentials for doing this is 1 - .032 36" length of piano wire twisted with a loop on the end and 1 hollowed end knitting needle. That is all I need, and I can whip one up (minus the whipping) in about 7 minutes, with no snags or popped threads of any kind. And if you get a length of piano wire, you can do up to 24" of bury! The longest I've done is 12", but I can easily double that if I wanted.

This is just too cool. And cheap. The piano wire was $1.59 for 3 - 36" lengths.

Sounds good! I just played around with a guitar string and it works well too. It's a little limber, but no problem to use. LOTS of options!

I recently purchased Amsteel Blue for my whoopie sling suspension on my SBpro, and everything went smoothly with the splicing. After reading the Rope Tree Huggers thread, AngrySparrow mentioned his bowline knot slipped out under load with the Amsteel Blue.

I used a bowline knot to form a lark's head to the end of my hammock, should I be worried? Eye splice for the lark's head to hold better?

I've never had a bowline fail that way with Amsteel or Vectrus, and I use bowlines a lot! A habit of mine though is to put an overhand stopper knot at the end of the "rabbit", just in case that slippery devil has any thoughts about slipping back out of the "hole".

An eye splice properly anchored will work just fine and look very professional.

I'd do an eye splice, but if you finish off the running end of the bowline with a stopper knot (overhand or figure eight) I think the bowline would be okay.

I've also had good luck with this in the past:

I forget what it's called but it's basically a lark's head (hidden by the eye on the right) secured with a slippery half hitch (the one in the pic hasn't been snugged up yet). I've never had it fail to hold.

Note to self: post quicker or wait for da Grizz to answer first...

Grizz is right..a stopper knot to back up the bowline works fine. That's what I did right after it slipped on me using Amsteel Blue. I should have done that in the first place.

The cleaner looking solution is indeed an eye-splice, though.

Eye splice as in to form the lark's head or eye splice through the channelled end of the hammock as a "permanent" attachment? Just clarifying what you meant, I'm not opposed to semi-permanent.

Either way should work fine. I use mine to form a lark's head.

Your method works fine too...there's no one right way to do any of this.

Yeah, I was just asking after I realized the possibility of the bowline slipping. I will be putting that knot to a true test when I get in the hammock. If the eye splice is a more secure solution, I'm all about trying it. It's pretty fun to mess around with, even if threading the needle is a pain!

    an innie or an outie?

The times I've put thin cord through a hammock's end-channel I've always doubled up the cord, to spread the stress on the channel fabric. You could pass the cord through the channel twice and then finish off with bury...or do the lark's head. Me I'd do the lark's head.
