i believe this is due to the movement of the toggle in action. I consider this twisting motion of the sling/toggle as the culprit.

    what to do??
Amsteel gets a bit fuzzy with use, but this is normal and nothing to worry about.

If you're describing the part of the whoopie where the bury begins (the base of the adjustable loop) it's normal for this area to have the braid look kind of stretched out.

Amsteel has great abrasion resistance so the marlin spike knot isn't likely to be damaging the line at point of contact if that's the concern.

I did mine last night - once I figured out what lengths I wanted, it went quickly, maybe 10 minutes per.

I could spend the night looking through all 68 pages of this excellent thread but help me out here please. To make a continuous loop ( in 8 strand 7/64ths ) do I just bury one end into the other @ 10" and lock it to form the loop?

    Thanks for any help!

Good grief, I finally get to the end of the thread only to find that everyone has given up the ghost.

I would really appreciate any guidance and comments for utility of the following arrangement of suspension components:

I intend to create a suspension where both the continuous loop and Whoopi-sling are constructed integral to a descending-ring rather than looped/ knotted on. It would seem to me that with this arrangement, I could benefit from easier adjusting of sling-length by putting the adjusting loop on the ring rather than on the marlinspike/toggle.

What are the pros/ cons of this enterprise?

notdone, it seems to me that what you propose would work okay as far as adjustments go. I'm not quite sure, though, how you intend to use the continuous loop. I'd used one through each end channel of my double layer DIY and if you're doing something like that, you may as well larks head / girth hitch it to the ring. If you "hard wire" the ring with the continuous loop and the adjustable loop of the whoopie sling, I don't see how you would disconnect the suspension from the hammock body. If the suspension is wet I'd want to be able to stow it separate from the hammock.

Valid point Frwag, there is no sense in building in unnecessary annoyances and limitations. As long as I am seeking help, I will start from scratch and explore any useful idea. I am not married to any particular design concept. What I want to do is create a dedicated suspension for a gathered end hammock with a 100”± structural RL.

My functional set-up goal is to be able to, determine height and slack requirements, place huggers, set suspension length, and attach; with minimal built in requirements for fussing about.

Suspension qualities in order of importance:
    1. Support trustworthiness
    2. Secure diversion of water migration
    3. Minimum bulk
    4. Easy segregation of contaminated components
    5. Minimal demand for digital dexterity
    6. Convenient adjustability
    7. Ideally, an 11.5’ to +20’ hang span
    8. If marlinspike & toggles are to be used, keep MS as close to the tree as possible.

I just reread my previous post and I have no doubt that all I have done is recap the reasons which instigated the activites documented this thread. That was not my intent.

    1. I remain skeptical of omitting drip rings in that success in utilizing whoppie tails, knots &/or drip strings is subject to many variables and that that passive wicking may be overwhelmed in the right conditions. From a safety standpoint, I need secure knowledge that my down will not get wet.

    2. I would like to avoid attaching Amsteel blue to the gathered end with a knot and prefer a closed eye w/larks head.

    3. I cannot figure out how to keep my minimum hang span down to 11.5' – 12’ and still accommodate preference 1 & 2 above.
