    Newbie tarp question...

I was looking around for a good tarp for under $100 and went over to Campmor and found one that I kinda like. 10x12 silnylon Equinox by Kellty I think.
Any input on this would be graet. Also I don't sew or I would ask how do-it-myself. Thanks...

It's plenty big enough, but it has grommets. That's a no-no, especially if they are metal. Grommets rip out too easily. But... it would work and probably last you a while. And maybe by the time they rip out you'll have learned to sew or know someone who does. It shouldn't be too much of a project to fix any grommet tear outs with reinforcing patch and webbing tie outs.

Of course, it would be easier to just get a better tarp.

There are a few folks on here who have one of those Equinox sil tarps, hopefully they can chime in and say my grommet concerns are way off base and they have held up fine to gale force winds.

Tarps are a trade-off between weight and cost. The lighter you want, the more expensive it will be. So for under $100, there aren't many silnylon tarps (for light weight) to choose from...most are 8x10, which will be adequate for many hammocks, but not all. Rectangle (as opposed to catenary tarps) will be a little more difficult to get a really tight pitch, but still no issue...people have been using 8x10 rectangle silnylon tarps for years.

The biggest thing for this model is that you want ribbon tie-outs instead of grommets. Grommets will rip out but the tie-outs should last longer.

If weight isn't that important to you, check out the Gear Guide polyurethane tarps from http://www.sportsmansguide.com/searc...ear+guide+tarp
A bit heavier and bulkier, but awesome coverage and definitely under your $100 limit.

There's another 8x10 tarp out there with tie-outs...forget the maker right now. Integral designs maybe? It should be about the same price as the equinox one.

I saw this the other day

Check out Craigslist in Atlanta and search for "hammock tarp". The person is selling 2 tarps for $75 for both. One is the Eno fast fly.

I would stay away from the ENO tarp. At best it is a "fair weather" tarp
