    Carabiner chafing concerns

At a campout last weekend, I noticed one of my scouts was hanging his hammock from a #4 nite-ize S-biner. I was concerned that it wasn't strong enough, so I swapped him for the biners on my PLUQ (which were my stock ENO ones).

However, I noticed the nite-ize are not as rounded as normal biners, and since I clip it directly to my whoopie, I'm worried about it fraying the line. I don't have a lot of experience with amsteel so I don't know if my concerns are valid.

Should I just ditch the nite-ize and use normal biners or am I worrying about nothing?

Amsteel (dyneema) is a very abrasion resistant material. Keep an eye on it until you gain confidence, but I would not expect any problems at all. Many of us use S-biners and mini-biners clipped to whoopie slings to hang our UQs.

The OP isn't. He swapped out one of his scouts' S biners for one he uses on his UQ.

If amsteel is to be used for weight bearing, there is a manufacturer recommended amount of bend. Can't remember off hand how many fids it is.

Nutty, Nite-Ize is the company that makes the s-biners.

Thanks all and sorry for any confusion in my post. Yeah I'm hoping the 7/16 amsteel will be tough enough to hold my UQ, which is just tension, not weight. In retrospect, the biner will probably fail before the line frays...

The amsteel is over kill for a UQ. I like to use micro binners myself.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
