    Ratchet straps

If you use a ratchet strap for your tree strap you might want to watch this
Do not knot Polyester Webbing | Cordstrap. this is on you tube.
I have had 3 of these straps to break on me
(I think they are one in the same)
I have went with the webbing that rei sales, on Monday I will order some with loops in them from ready straps.

Wow, that is definitely catastrophic failure! I use ratchet straps, but I take the hooks off and run the strap around the tree and through the end loop and attach to my hammock with descender rings. It is a quick and easily adjustable set up. I have had no problems so far, but I constantly check my straps for wear. I hope you did not experience a meeting with the ground that was too unpleasant! Thanks for sharing.

What was the breaking strength rating on those straps?

i have had a few of those straps(same color combination) & their quality doesn't meet minimum standards, set by me

as one who plays several games, i have become very selective when it comes to securing toys w/ straps & hanging my butt from straps

those who continue to purchase their straps off the DOLLAR TABLE will continue meeting the ground, as it comes up & smites them on the butt

the potential damage/injury expense far outweighs the savings @ the time of purchase

don't just blame STRAPS, BLAME THOSE STRAPS

    EXCELLENT RESOURCES!

flat nylon & polyester, being my 2-goto materials, are confirmed as ADVISABLE, for ratchet straps

    thx

Yes I used the msh on all 3 straps. The straps were new and never used, with no damage to them. Wasn't being cheap, just trying to use what I had on hand. I now know, just wanted to let some of the newer people know about the dangers of these straps. They seem to work fine with desending rings, just don't tie any kind of a knot in them. I used to work with straps picking up tons and tons of Steele at a time so I know a little about straps.

I have been using the harbor freight yellow polyester straps for a while now and no signs of wear like this. I use a MSH with a biner for a toggle, then clip the slings to those.

I plan on getting a new set of straps from Gary at some point, maybe sooner than later after seeing this.

There is something wrong with the quality of those straps or they're not rated for the forces you excerted on them.

I use light duty cargo Walmart straps with < 600Lbs breaking strength for over 3 years. Same straps. Always check for wear when I use them. I have a lot of these straps since they are <$6 for 2 12' straps. Cut in half gives me 4 6' straps. I use 2 for hammock and 2 for tarp. I also use them for my kayaks to tie them down for over a year.

I haven't seen that type of damage for the tear section or stretched section on any of my straps.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
