As much fun as amsteel is (because i cant disagree with you there), the point of having straps is to extend the length with which you can hang from, instead of just using the short tree huggers that come with most hammocks. If the idea is to use as little strap as possible couldn't you just make a set of woopies with a longer reach? say 15-20 feet on each side?

That depends on where you live. I have 8' tree straps and they are often just barely long enough to wrap around the tree.

Good point i have some decent sized trees here in Texas as well, but shorter straps like that are only meant for being tree huggers or doing as ntxkayakr suggested, keeping the straps to a minimum and maximizing use of Amsteel.
The straps I use with a MSH and woopies are 20' on each side so my setup is designed to use the straps in the suspension as well as keeping the trees pretty.

For me personally I have a set of 9' tree huggers, sometimes I do just need 7 or so feet just to reach around the tree and have strap left for an MSH. I always try to maximize the use of my whoopies with minimum strap length, this gives the most space to easy adjusting. With decent size trees(say 4' around or so), I could theoretically then bridge a 26' gap I think. Although I would have to bring a stepladder to reach up high enought to get a good angle(I'm only 6'5").
