Red River Gorge Trip May 16-18

I got the chance to take my sons' troop down to the gorge. I have been slowly getting back to backpacking thanks to the hammock and you forum members. This was the crew's first time backpacking. A number of scouts have been seeing my setup and started to get their own too.

We did a 10 mile loop (6.5 first day 3.5 second) around Gray's Arch (the boys ran ahead and missed it) to the Koomer Ridge and back on Buck trail. It was just the right amount of toughness for them with switchback that provided great views as rewards

One adventure on one of our nights. My son was setting up his hammock and saw his sack rustle with the wind. When he picked it up, he thought he had left something there. After reaching in, he realized it was a snake. Then looking in he said, "Hey guys, there's a venomous snake in my sack"

We let the copperhead loose very far away from our camp and trail. God was really looking out for us. It was one of the best weekends I've spent with my son. Thanks for helping.

Definitely one of my favorite places to camp. As to the snake in the sack...just wow. I have rarely had an issue in there with snakes. Was the bag hung or on the ground when the little fella got in it?
I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.

The stuff sack was on the ground. There was a fallen log near where he set up, and we guess that is where it came from

love RRG we had our troop out there on May 30-31. Boy was it busy. We're getting ready to plan our next backpacking trip to RRG in July.
