    First DIY project - climashield top quilt

    Last night I completed my first DIY project. I used 1.1oz ripstop and 5oz climashield. I wanted it to be convertible to a flat quilt for wrapping around myself in the evenings, so I did a convertible footbox using a drawstring and union tape. I've never used a sowing machine before, and my (incredibly patient and wonderful) mother in law ended up sewing the insulation for me after I managed to screw up a seam badly enough that we had to tear it out. That said, I did all the cutting, some of the sewing, and learned a TON in the process.

    I'm really happy with how it came out. It's 1 lb 10-14 oz (as close as I can get on my bathroom scale), and compresses down to the size of a cantaloupe. I only carry a 40L pack, so volume is as much of a concern to me as weight. It fits me perfectly.

    Thanks to the community for all the information I lurked out of you . I really appreciate all the wonderful resources that everyone has shared. I get to test it out this weekend at Devil's Lake in WI. I am PUMPED.

    Nice job. If it's comfy enough for cats, it's comfy enough for you.

    Tearing out seams happens, and it always will, but each time you learn something new

    Thanks for the kind words, folks!

    With shipping it was just under $70 for the materials. That's with buying some extra ripstop to use in another project. It took us about 6 hours total to build it. It would have taken significantly longer if I was trying to do it solo.

    Thanks! The color was the only non-camo that diygearsupply had in stock at the time, so it's good that I like it. Final dimensions are just a tiny hair over 75"x50" (at the shoulder).

    Very nice job.....and welcome to the forum!!

    This is probably my next diy project. I so hate using a sleeping bag as a TQ. I like the style and look of yours a lot. Did you any set of plans to make this?

    Thank you, and thank you! My first hang I wormed my way all the way into my very tight mummy bag (it was too cold to just top-quilt that trip, I need the hood in place), and once was enough. I'm really excited to have the right tool for the job.

    On the plans, oops! I had linked them in another thread, but forgot to post them here. I worked off of these:
    <http://kringlelight.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/sin50_guide.pdf>

    I'm the same size as the dude who put these together, so I went with his measurements. I did a few things differently. I left out the drawstring on top (no cape for me), and the grosgrain loops on the sides. These were meant to hold it underneath you with shock cord. I don't really move around much in my sleep, so no need for me. The other thing I changed was that I used two pieces of ripstop big enough that I didn't have to sew one of the panels out of two separate pieces.
