Couple of little tricks to the buttonholer - hold the top thread in your hand as you start the buttonholer so that it catches under the sewing - it's like backstitching on a seam, it locks the end of the thread in.
Also, let the buttonholer go around twice. It puts enough thread down in two rounds to give you a nice long lasting buttonhole so that the fabric doesn't fray in between the threads.
